How Gambia tours differ

Most excursions in The Gambia fall into four groups: a boat on the river, a heritage day around Kunta Kinteh Island, a morning of birdwatching, and a day in a forest reserve such as Makasutu. They differ in length, in what the price covers and in whether it is quoted per person or per group.

The examples below come from single operators. They show what one product costs, not a market range, and a published price is not a booking confirmation. Check the date, the meeting point and the inclusions for each one.

The main types of tour

What each one involves.

River trips

Boat trips run from Janjanbureh, either a circuit of the island or a longer day in the river national park. Chimpanzees live on islands as part of a rehabilitation project, and guests watch from the boat. Landing is not allowed, and sightings are never guaranteed.

Heritage day

The Kunta Kinteh trip combines a ferry crossing from Banjul to Barra, the museum at Juffureh and a boat to the island. It is a visit to a place of the slave trade and its abolition, so allow time and go with respect. The ruins are fragile.

Birdwatching

Guides start at sunrise. One operator recommends November to April, partly for the European migrants, but Abuko suits birding all year. Sites in operator programmes include Kotu Creek, Abuko, Brufut Woods, Lamin Creek, Marakissa and Tendaba. No species can be promised.

Multi-day river trips

The cabin ship Fula Princess is out of service. Multi-day river trips now travel by day boat and stay in lodges on land, so do not plan around a floating hotel.

What to check before you book

The wording matters more than the headline price.

Per person or per group

The river trips above are priced for 1 to 10 people together. The heritage day and the birding walk are priced per person. Compare on the same basis.

Entry fees and food

Some listings include museum or park entry, others do not. Meals and drinks are often extra. Read the inclusions line by line.

Ferry and road delays

The Banjul to Barra ferry runs, but British advice warns of overloading and weak safety equipment. Waiting times are hard to predict. The Senegambia Bridge near Farafenni is the alternative crossing. Roadblocks can cause delays, and driving long distances at night is discouraged.

Life jackets

Pirogues can be overloaded. Make sure a life jacket is on board and worn, and avoid long journeys in a small boat.

Season

June to October is the rainy season, with floods that can close roads at short notice. Dry months from November suit most excursions.

Current situation

Protests over power cuts took place around Banjul and Serrekunda in September 2026, and a presidential election is set for 5 December 2026. Read your government's current travel advice before you go.

Gambia tours: frequently asked questions

How much do tours in The Gambia cost?

The examples above range from €15 per person for a three-hour birding walk to £120 for a six-hour river trip priced for up to ten people. These are single operators' published rates, not a market range, and extras can change the final price.

Do I need to book a tour in advance?

Some operators sell half-day and full-day birding tours before your trip or on the spot, subject to availability, and a guide may be replaced if the named one is not free. For multi-day trips and the chimpanzee camp, book ahead.

Can I walk among the chimpanzees?

No. The animals live on river islands in a rehabilitation project, and guests are not allowed to land. You watch from the boat, and sightings are not guaranteed.

Are meals included?

It differs by tour. The Makasutu listing includes lunch and refreshments, the Tendaba trip includes breakfast and lunch, and the Kunta Kinteh day excludes food and drinks. Check each offer.

Are tours suitable for children?

The Makasutu listing shows reduced child rates and free cancellation up to 48 hours before. The chimpanzee camp has a minimum age of 13. Ask each operator about age rules.

When is the best time for a river or bird tour?

The dry months from November to April suit most trips, and birding guides often start at sunrise. Rain and floods from June to October can affect roads and schedules.
